She has a rather timid personality, generally sounding very meek and self-doubting due to her history, not helped by the common nickname for CVEs being "Combustible, Vulnerable, Expendable" due to their poor overall protection. Because of this, she often has a wavy mouth and looks as if she's on the verge of crying. She is also extremely fearful of her Japanese counterparts, especially capital ships, constantly worrying that they may fire upon her at any moment. The historical Gambier Bay was sunk in the Battle of Samar during the Battle of Leyte Gulf after taking gunfire from Chikuma (Kancolle)|, with Yamato (Kancolle)| finishing her off. She was the only American aircraft carrier sunk by enemy surface gunfire during World War II, and also the Yamato's only confirmed kill.

Her abyssal form is assumed to be the Escort Water Princess.
