She has short black hair, green-framed glasses, and grey eyes. In the anime, the lenses of her glasses have a heads-up display that shows various information. All of the Kongou-class wear a modified miko uniform with differently colored skirts (hers is black), thigh boots, and wear the same signature winged hairband.

During the Second Battle of Guadalcanal, the historical Kirishima took the lead in a bloody night battle that, together with the previous night's losses, sank so many ships that it led to the body of water they fought in being named "Ironbottom Sound". Kirishima helped sink several Allied ships and was able to damage South Dakota (Kancolle)|, but ultimately was sunk by Washington (kancolle)|.

Because of these events, Kirishima is sometimes shown as being rivals with South Dakota (Kancolle)|, as well sometimes portrayed as having a hot temper or a borderline sadistic side. The pool {{pool:Kantai_Collection_-_It's_Mic_Check_Time_Dammit!|It's Mic Check Time, Dammit!}} is dedicated to this violent side of hers (the name coming from her doing a microphone check in her intro as well as in her hourlies).
