Because the historical Yamato had a career mostly based around impressing people, Yamato is often depicted as a shy and soft-spoken housewife. Yamato was historically referred to as the Hotel Yamato, due to her relatively luxurious quarters and the fact that she was never used in combat until late in the war, when defeat was certain.

Yamato only fired her massive 460 mm guns in battle once during the Battle of Samar to finish off Gambier Bay (kancolle)|. This is the only confirmed kill of Yamato during her entire career. She was sunk on 7 April 1945 during Operation Ten-gou, in which she was bombarded with dozens of bombs and torpedoes before being sunk off southern Kyushu.
